Nymans Gardens in June.

We visited these gardens in March to see the fabulous display of Rhododendrons and Camellias and promised to return in June to see the Rose garden as much as anything else!

Upon arrival a guided tour from a National Trust volunteer lady driving a buggy was about to set off at 10.30, we booked ourselves on, only two others on board so take a tour with us. Let’s go …

The theme for children on this visit was ‘The Tiger who came to tea’.

The June borders have lots of blues and yellows planted within.

This Aruncus dioicus (Goat’s Beard) was a real magnet for Bees.

Driving slowly around we saw some wonderful plants, such as this huge Cornus.

Geraniums with Alliums.

I believe this is Eryngium ‘Miss Willmott’s ghost’.

Now we are nearing the Rose garden, the area I had so been looking forward to so it was concerning when our guide remarked that it wasn’t looking too good this year!

It seems there is now too much Phosphorous in the soil, the Roses are suffering and more than likely in the Autumn there will be a huge change to this area.

Whether that will mean changing the soil, treating it or whatever I really hope the Nymans team will be able to return this area to its former glory.

Walk around and enjoy the best of the Roses, I’ve left the worse to last!

The whole area looked in need of weeding and deadheading as can be seen from the next photo … such a shame.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though as many other plants were looking very healthy and well cared for …

Finally, here is the lovely Dovecot at Nymans House.

The tour on the buggy took about an hour and was certainly worth taking … thanks for looking in.

That was lovely Shirley, pitty about the rose garden, I hope something can be done to save it.

What a lovely treat!!! For us too :-))
I lived those roses, gorgeous, subtle colours..I do hope too, that they can salvage their rose collection or at least have another area filled with roses for all to enjoy. Fingers crossed!
Sounds a very relaxed and lovely buggy ride round, Shirley. Weather was fine too!
Thank you for sharing.

Tanks so much, Shirley, for sharing with us your wonderful visit! I feel as if I had been there with you!

As you say it's a shame about the rose garden - let's hope they get it sorted out over next winter.

A great visit Shirley..despite the phosphorus situation the roses you have shown are so beautiful....and having a tour guide topped it all.... good idea.

Did they explain how there came to be too much phosphorous? Was it over fertilised? What a shame!

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments. I have messaged Nymans re the Rose garden but not received a reply yet. There were many volunteers there, sadly not a member of the gardening team to ask about it. I shall report back should I hear further.

I have had a reply from Nymans Gardening team to my message:

We are aware that the Rose Garden isn’t at its best. Unfortunately, a combination of disease, challenging weather over the last few years, and an aging rose collection has resulted in many losses and overall poor plant health. Soil tests carried out earlier this year also showed up high phosphorus levels which is detrimental to the health of roses as it causes nutrient lock up in the soil. In autumn this year, we will begin the process of replacing all the roses in the Rose Garden, and improving the soil. The new planting scheme will include more early summer flowering shrubs and dense groundcover throughout, including a variety of early summer flowering perennials to compliment the roses. We are aiming to have all the replanting complete by the end of 2025 but as it will be done in stages, there will still be plenty to see next year.

It will be glorious when it’s finished. Ageing Roses are quite unsightly sometimes. And everything in a garden has a lifespan. They will be able to grow more modern plants in a more complimentary way. Lots to look forward to!

That sounds a positive reply, Shirley. Thankfully they have a plan!

Thanks, Shirley, for posting their reply to your message. I've seen ageing roses over the years, as Karen says, they do become rather unsightly. Let's hope they plant more roses in another area of the gardens.

Thanks Karen, Kate and David. It is going to be interesting to see the changes when we visit.

Thanks for taking us on an invigorating walk, Shirley.

Thanks for looking in ... I am so pleased we went on that day and not today as the 29 degree heat would be too much for us!
