I've Started (But Not Finished)

By AndrewR

As most of you know, I like to grow many plants, often unusual ones. Many of these come from small, specialist nurseries so it is important to get orders in early before the most choice things sell out. With this in mind, I placed my first two orders online over the weekend; this morning the first arrived (from Long Acre Plants near Wincanton, Somerset). They specialise in plants for shade and I’ve bought plants from them before and always been pleased with the results and service. Here are this year’s purchases:

What did I buy?

Cardamine pentaphyllus and cardamine quinquifolia
A couple of refined relations of our native Ladies Smock, both carrying pink flowers in spring in a woodland setting

Corydalis ‘Berry Exciting’
Bright yellow leaves and purple blue flowers

x Heucherella ‘Golden Zebra’ and ‘Sweet Tea’
A couple of plants with coloured leaves for my foliage garden (along with the corydalis)

Hosta ‘Halcyon’, ‘Revolution’ and ‘Sum and Substance’
‘Halcyon’ is also destined for the foliage garden; it has glaucous blue leaves and is fairly slug tolerant. The other two will sit on bricks in the pond where they should be safe!

Lathyrus aureus
An herbaceous pea with burnt orange flowers in late spring

Ligularia dentata ‘Britt-Marie Crawford’
Another moisture lover with almost black leaves and yellow flowers in summer – this will go in the edge of the pond as well

Primula wilsonii var anisodora
This is one of the Asiatic primulas with dark red, dangling flowers. Needs a moist, shady spot

Did long Acre pack the pots around with corrugated cardboard and rely on the carrier not to turn the box upside down mine came like that last week ,they would never have got away with the Post office deliveries like that. Even though it said THIS WAY UP
I was well pleased with Hepaticas ,Hellebore's Anemones, Erythroniums and a couple of shade herbaceous plants that arrived.

Bjs - yes, they did. That's the way they always do them and I've never had a problem so perhaps it's a good courier company. I also ordered some hepaticas but they'd run out - looks like you had mine!!

Cristina - the Golden Zebra is a heucherella which is a cross between a heuchera and a tiarella (just so you don't waste time looking for it under the wrong name).
Sweet Tea is the one at the top of the picture and Golden Zebra is under it

You've got a nice mixture there Andrew. I've lost my Ligularia Britt Marie Crawford ... dont seem to like my conditions. My member friend Simbad does well with them, hers are beautiful.

Good plants choices, Andrew.

What type of conditions are you planning to provide for your Heucherellas ? Part-sun ? Soil-type ? Thanks.

Had an email from the very same company today, some good offers, good to see the quality, as I have not ordered from them before. I had the ligularia from is a corker.

Nice group of plants :-) I've ordered from them before and was well happy with the plants. Still having a fight with my conscience about ordering more plants this season.Surprisingly conscience is winning so far....

Me again - to say thank you SO MUCH Andrew for recommending Long Acre plants . . . a new-to-me mail order company. I've nearly always used Crocus in the past, but have just spent a happy hour on Long Acre's site, and their prices are good. :))
