Private Gardens Of Cornwall - Part 1

By AndrewR

Think Cornish gardens and large, wooded valleys full of camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias comes to mind. But not all the gardens in the county fall into this category. I recently spent a few days looking at these to see what flowers there at this time of year.

First we went to Trebah – a large wooded valley! This was a change in the itinerary as the coach could not negotiate the narrow lanes to reach the intended destination.

As well as woodland paths, you are able to walk through a bamboo grove or a gunnera forest. At the bottom of the valley is a blue lake

Among the interesting plants were acacia pravissimia

And clerodendon trichotomum (we saw this in several larger gardens on the trip)

The next garden was Ken-Caro, a four acre garden tended by an elderly couple. If you have £650,000 to spare, this garden is for sale. This is the view you get for your money

The garden consists mainly of large shrubs and grassy areas

You’d also get hydrangea paniculata ‘Pinky-Winky’

And clethra alnifolia ‘Pink Spice’

Finally in part 1, I will take you to Botonnoc, the largest private estate in Cornwall.

This was mainly full of large trees but some hydrangeas give colour just now.

There is also room for the odd palm tree and tree fern

To be continued ….

You do visit some gorgeous places, Andrew!

is it just the garden for sale? no house to go with it? :-) Mind you, I'd live in a tent if it got me this.

Look forward to further episodes.

Fran - no, there's a bungalow with the garden. I only concentrated on the important stuff - the garden!

I wouldn't have recognised Trebah Andrew, it must be ten years since we went and it looks much better now than it did then. Its part in the Dday landings fascinated me

Found Trebah gardens on the of the rhodos and hydrangeas in spring is just spectacular...also loved the gunnera path and the new water gardens. Have pinned pics of it on my Pinterest page, was just blown away by the scale of the planting and the area covered, especially the beachfront.
