Who needs flowers?

By AndrewR

It is now ten years since I started work on my foliage garden. Yes, it has flowers, but the principal interest comes from coloured foliage. As the plants are now starting to knit together, I thought I would post some pictures to show how it has developed.

Northeast corner

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ’Pelt’s Blue’ at the back
Middle shrubs – hydrangea macrophylla ‘Tricolor’ on the left, weigela ‘Naomi Campbell’ in the middle, abelia grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’ on the right
Podocarpus ‘Young Rusty’ in front

Northwest corner

Back left – berberis thunbergii ‘Rose Glow’
Back right – cornus alternifolia ‘Argentea’
Front left – hosta ‘Halcyon’
Front right – euonymus fortunei ‘Blondy’
Pot – festuca ‘Elijah Blue’

Southwest corner

Back row (left to right) – rosa glauca, persicaria ‘Red Dragon’, sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’
Middle row – persicaria ’Painter’s Palette’, pseudowintera colorata ‘Red Leopard’, pulmonaria ’Blake’s Silver’ with persicaria ‘Purple Fantasy’ behind
Front row – impatiens omeiana ‘Ice storm’ with rhododendron ‘Everred’ behind, ajuga reptans Burgundy Glow’ with astelia ‘Silver Shadow’ (struggling) behind, mukdenia ‘Karasuba’

Southeast corner

Back row – phormium ‘Jester’, acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’
Middle row – hypericum indorum ‘Golden Beacon’, unnamed hellebore with purple foliage in spring, anaphalis margaritacea, astrantia major ‘Sunningdale Variegated’
Front row – rosa wichuraiana ‘Variegata’, heucherella ‘Stoplight’ with a heuchera and helleborus x sternii ‘Silver Dollar’ behind, brunnera macrophylla ‘Looking Glass’ with geranium macrorrhizum ‘Variegatum’ behind

When the rest of the garden is looking brown in late October, this area is still alive with colour.

Wonderful use of foliage plants, so many colours and shapes and each corner looking so different. Thank you for giving us the names of all the plants, I've made a note of some for future use!

Its a lovely effect. Very encouraging for me too as I have a newly planted Rosy Glow which will be fairly close to Euonymus silver queen when they both get bigger - Its just the effect I was hoping for. You've a fantastic variety of shapes and colours there - most enviable!

Sk - there are acers with better autumn colour, but 'Bloodgood' is still the best for purple leaves during the growing season.
