Summers over

By ands

The weather is turning cooler (central heating on this week) and I wanted to make a blog entry before the growing season is too distant a memory.

some crops have done fairly well but many have had problems, The carrots got root fly so hardly any made it to the table, There was a bit of blight on the potatoes but I dug those up before there were any serious affects.

I had a good crop of peas and a reasonable crop of beans

The strawberries did really well and were delicious, the Kohlrabi were worthwhile and I am still enjoying those.
The marigolds look really nice but they didn’t stop the root fly from finding the carrots.

I also tried Squash and aubergines but I don’t think they are suited to the sheffield weather. Having said that I have eaten one of the squash and it was very nice.

I always sow Early Nantes carrot seed in June for a crop in October, they never get root fly.
There is also Fly Resistant seed.

A few weeks back on G.W I saw Carol Klein visiting some allotments in S.Wales, a chap on the prog was growing his carrots in big buckets, he had the bucket stood on a bench, the carrots were lovely and he never had a problem with carrot fly, apparently they can`t stand heights, lol, matey said he`d been growing them that way for years....
Not a bad year for your garden otherwise though and it all looks very neat and tidy, well done...
