New acquisitions.

By anget

An exciting new package arrived earlier in the week:

I have been searching for ‘Summer Sky’ for a few years. It’s quite elusive, so I’m happy to have come across this. It’s a very unassuming, dainty sibirica in pale blue and yellow. An older variety.

Iris ‘Ally-Oops’. Just fancied trying this one! It should be a strong grower, a pseudacorus/sibirica cross.

Epimedium epsteinii. Someone on here had one (can’t remember who) and I liked the look of it. So, it should be good as long as I can keep the evil weevils away from it.

Penstemon ‘Sour Grapes’. I’m interested that they call this synonymous with ‘Stapleford Gem’’ I lost both of mine and could never tell them apart when I grew them! Very happy to replace it as I adore the subtle colouring and smaller flowers.

Aster novi-belgii ‘Thundercloud’. Another plant I have lusted after for a few years and could never find. We saw it in the Picton Gardens in Worcs. but they had sold out and this is the first time I have seen it for sale since. A very moody colour.

I shall plant them out once the risk of frost has passed. The weather is set fair for the next few days anyway. I hope you’re all enjoying the unnaccustomed brightness!

So glad you have found the plants you wanted Ange. Sour grapes is my favourite Penstemon! Hope they all do well for you. ( the labels look familiar … could they be from Dorset Perennials?)

You have an interesting selection there. Saw Epimedium epsteinii initially on here in Andrews page, liked it so much bought myself one.

Lovely selection Ange, I especially like the Aster and Epimedium, would love to have the Penstemon but they are another that sadly do not like my soil, I've tried many times over the years, planted in different areas without success....

smashing selection of plants there Ange. I always thought Sour grapes and Stapleford gem were the same, that explains why. there are 2 geraniums that are the same too cant remember which ones.

Amazingly for me, Meadow, I do know where most are going!

You're right, Sheila, all from DP. I've bought from them before and obviously you have too.

Oh, Siris, p'raps it was Andrew's I saw. Are you pleased woth it? I'm intrigued to see the flowers when they show themselves.

Sorry penstemons don't do well for you, Lincs. They seem happy here, though I have lost one or two. Now I try and take cuttings each year.

Yes, SBG, they always seem to be sold as separate plants from other suppliers. I wonder what the geranium was/were?

Yes, I remember the plants from Dorset Perennials being a really good size and quality - great choice Ange!

You have a good collection there Anget and bet you can't wait to plant them out!
I had Penstemon Sour Grapes at the other house and as it was a winter when we moved here, it got left behind!

Good choice of plants Anget. Love Siberian ireses and Epimediums. For some strange reason cannot grow Penstemons ....but buying some every year regardless.

Very good choices there, Ange! Lovely selection indeed. You’ll certainly be well chuffed with your iris, summer sky!
That’s a very attractive epimedium, it’s looks quite dainty. Look forward to seeing your purchases planted up!

Our soil takes ages to warm up, Rose, and I have been caught out before planting too early and putting stuff where other things have already been planted, so I have to wait at least another month or so. Cold, clay soil.

At least penstemons root easily from cuttings, Klahanie. I wouldn't want to be without them. Just cut back all of ours in the borders and taken lots of cuttings. I hope at least some will take.

Watch this space, Kate!
