Leonardslee Gardens....again!

By eirlys

Four years ago I posted the above image of the fabulous rock garden at Leonardslee Gardens.(West Sussex). These are now privately owned and closed to the public.

The rock Spring garden is spectacular as I think you will agree and worthy of another view. (The image is mine!).

The following URL link shows other views of the garden and the images were taken by a Mr David Parker. He has given me permission to post it here.

Gosh it doesn't seem four years since you showed us this - it certainly does deserve another outing. What a pity its not open to the public any more - you must be glad you have the photo!

It's stunning.....what a shame it's no longer open to the public but, the new owners may change their mind in the future maybe.

Eirlys, back in June or July 2010 both Andrewr and myself made comment about the closure of Leonardslee Gardens. My parents used to take my sister and I there, back in the late 50's/early 60's and many years later, OH and I would take our children there and I found it so sad to learn of the closure.

Should anyone wish to see more of the gardens from 2010, type Leonardslee Gardens in the search box and take a look at the photos on Andrewr's blog. Happy memories for me ... :o))

Shirley: Is it nearly 7 years since the gardens were closed? They have said on several occasions that they hope to re-open them but I don't think it will happen in my lifetime.

I will certainly have a look your photos. Thank you.

Steragram : Yes, actually I am rather pleased with it!! I started with a Fuji which is still around somewhere( nice but large by today's digital camera standards), and graduated (!) to the superb Casio. This worked so well until my OH sat on it! I have another bought on e-Bay but suspect photos are not as sharp for some reason. Mind you the rock garden is so beautiful I think ever camera would do it justice.

Wildrose and Paul: Beautiful gardens, I agree.

Eirlys, according to the West Sussex Gazette report in 2013, "considered investment is planned for the long term development of the estate, including Leonardslee House, so as to provide a sustainable strategy to maintain and enhance the gardens and buildings and to provide a range of visitor attractions and services."

I can only wonder what is going on behind the high wall that surrounds these lovely gardens!

My mother once said that Percy Thrower used to have his garden open every year for charity. He found so many of his plants had been spoiled by people stealing cuttings that he gave it up.

Latest news is that Leonardslee Gardens are now under new ownership and will be re-opening to the public in 2018.

The new owners are asking for any information relating to the history of Leonardslee (old photos, leaflets, personal knowledge/experiences etc.) as they have very few details and pictures!

Oh that is excellent news, Shirley. Thank you for letting me/us know.

I really love these gardens. Some walking/clambering is required but the results are worth every effort.

Do hope the new owners will get all the information they seek.
