This genus is made up of just two different species that have their origins in the Azores, Canary Islands and the Mediterranean. These useful, evergreen shrubs are often clipped as topiary or used as hedging.

Laurus nobilis is well known as the tree that produces the culinary Bay leaf which is found in a bouquet garni, normally in dried form. The fresh leaves can also be used in cooking but the flavour tends to be milder than the dried forms.

The ancient Greeks used a wreath of bay leaves for nobles – the Greek god Apollo was often depicted wearing one!
