I like January and February because the days start to lengthen and spring is on the way. To me it’s an exciting time :)
I have some bulbs coming up – crocuses snowdrops and narcissi …, and a few flowers still survive on my Jasminum nudiflorum after a wonderful display last auatumn :-

Not many open yet on my viburnums, they don’t seem so good this year.
Viburnum tinus is just starting to open :-

Viburnim bodnantense also just starting and has very few flowers
maybe because I cut it back too much when my new trellises were being put up last summer :-

I have this little pot of Cyclamen coum. I used to have more in the garden but they don’t seem to be there now :(

A few Primroses have appeared and my Hellibores have buds on them so that’s something else to look forward to,
but the birds don’t seem to have eaten the Pyracantha berries this year again … maybe it’s in the wrong place for them …

A stray cat who has adopted one of our neighbours has been digging in the front garden and disturbing the bulbs, so I’ve put these wire shelvings there to keep him away …
He sits on the front windowsill when it gets the sun and Bella hisses at him, but he takes no notice lol :D

Not much to show in this blog but it’s a start …

Our long cold wind barely got started. We have 3 months to go. It's getting colder by the day. lol

Yes it’s a start Hywel, helping us all to think about Spring. I hope you didn’t get too cold taking the photos?!

This looks good, Hywel. I must have a wander in my garden and see what is happening. The bulbs including the Tulips are certainly appearing.

The pot of cyclamen is looking very colourful and pretty and it looks as if your viburnums are going to be really lovely.
Lots to look forward to.

i agree lots to look forward to in your garden. the wire to keep the other cats off is a good idea. Poor Bella having another cat ignore her.

Thank you all for reading my blog ...

Bathgate I hope your weather doesn't get too severe. It's a long way to spring yet but it's on the way :)

Sheila I didn't get too cold, I didn't stay out very long :)

Nice that your Tulips are coming up already Linda, I was late planting mine so they are slower.

Chris yes I am looking forward to seeing the Viburnums but I cut them back hard last year and they're taking a while to recover I think ...

Seaburngirl I hope the wire works, I don't want the bulbs dug up. I have to laugh at Bella sitting inside the window and hissing at the tomcat on the outside, but he takes no notice at all :D She eventually gets fed up and walks away in disgust ! :D

Great to see what's going on in your garden,Hywel! Those Cyclamen really make a statement!

On the balcony the bulbs are breaking through the surface of the compost & in a couple of months or so will be flowering! Spring is just 'round the corner! 😀

Yes its exciting times just around the corner! I noticed a few timid buds on some narcissi today and have a few nice hellebores. But the huge job of demossing the bloc drive looms...

9 Jan, 2019

Thank you both ...

Glad to hear of your bulbs Balcony

Good luck with the demossing Sue, It doesn't sound an easy job :(

We also look forward to Spring as we have a Spring garden. Several camellias are blooming, otherwise little colour in our garden.

Our cat has two Maine Coon cats and a MC kitten living next door. Theo is very handsome and our car is fascinated but scared. She runs indoors and complains and I have to shoo him away!

I agree this is an exciting time of the year, we are forever moving stuff around so we never know what will come up where, so its always a surprise!! you have many treasures to look forward to in your garden Hywel...

Thank you all for your comments :)

Eirlys, can you get a photo of the Main Coons? Sure Hywel would love it (& so would lots of us...)

10 Jan, 2019

Your winter jasmine has been so good Hywel, much earlier than mine.
I try not to wish my life away but once January is gone it's a relief, I can deal with cold February as the days are longer and it's a short month.

12 Jan, 2019

Yes, I like all cats Sue :)

I like January Dawn. The days are still short but all the fuss of Christmas and new year are out of the way, and that's what gets me down the most.
I don't cope well with cold weather but at least the days are soon to start lengthening.

13 Jan, 2019

I totally agree Hywel!

Like you, I also look forward to spring, Hywel. I've noticed so many bulbs coming up in the garden, when I was doing some tidying up last week. Snowdrops are even starting to flower here and there. The warmer/longer days will be here soon.

Enjoyed your blog Hywel. I agree it is nice to get Christmas behind us & to look forward to lengthening days.
I & my neighbour have been having terrible trouble with moles in our gardens. Every morning I have to replant bulbs & push down uplifted plants only to have them pushed up again as it goes along the same tunnels. My neighbour walks across his lawn& it all collapses under his feet, mole hills he shovels onto the beds. I don't really want to kill any wild life but I was so desperate that I made an enquiry, they wanted £50 per mole which you paid for every one caught. Needless to say they are still tunnelling, aided and abetted by digging squirrels & scratching cats( mine & others). Hey ho, a gardeners lot is not always a happy one. A belated Happy New Year to you & Beryl anyway, oh & also Bella.

FeverFew, I also have moles, its driving me mad, I keep clearing the hills onto the beds each day, I had advice on here but they still persist, we have our traps set, I hate doing it but desperate now, we’ve not caught one yet, the holes fill with soil, I think they’re going under them.

14 Jan, 2019

I tried with a trap some years back but never caught one. I think they must be smart & avoid them too.

15 Jan, 2019

We had results about twenty years ago with the traps but no success this time yet.

15 Jan, 2019

Thanks for all your comments.
I'm sorry some of you are having trouble with moles. I hope you'll find some way of dealing with it, although like you Feverfew I don't like killing things.

Waddy I'm glad you were able to get out in the garden for a while. I did too, yesterday ...

Thanks for the greetings Feverfew :) What a price to pay the mole catcher ! :O

Dawn I hope you can solve your problem with the moles soon ...

Hello Hywel .. some pretty flowers in your January garden.

16 Jan, 2019

Thank you TT x

16 Jan, 2019

Me too Hywel, we’ve had them for months now and making a real mess, i am hoping they will move on

16 Jan, 2019

Its happening Hywel, the days are getting longer, like you I'm not good with dark nights, its good to see you have some colour, it gives one a real boost to see things moving again, saying that some are completely confused by the weather and mild spell, they have not even died back, lol.
No flowers on my remaining Viburnum but that is my fault as I asked hubby to cut it very low down last summer, half of it was completely dead, I lost my other two last year and honestly do not know how this one has managed to reshoot, actually I'm now giving it another chance but if it gets eaten again it will have to come out....

16 Jan, 2019

Love your yellow Jasmine and the Pyracantha Hywel I wonder if the mildish weather why the birds have nt had the berries and fed from the ground instead not having much ice and snow.
I have nt been out in my garden yet to look to see if any thing has come out.

I like the optimistic tone of your blog Hywel... I'm sitting at the computer looking out at what should be the road...but we're in total white-out. Wind is blowing at the top of the Beaufort Scale...and it's howl makes me feel forlorn while the snow is drifting into barricades across the highways...BUT~ It's great to see your flowers starting. I have about 60 days to go before we'll even start to lose our snow. think of me when you catch a whiff of the daphs. lol...

27 Jan, 2019

Thanks you all for your comments ...

I hope your viburnum recovers Sue and doesn't get eaten again. Mine was being eaten by something last year but I cut it back hard and sprayed it and it's fine now (I hope !)

I hope you'll be able top go out soon Thrupennybit. The weather is mild so far this winter. I hope it lasts like that.

I feel sorry for you Lori, you must feel marooned :( We had a rough night here last night with torrential showers of hailstones and today was rough too with howling winds. Roll on spring ! :)

27 Jan, 2019

The days are beginning to get lighter at last and it's turning colder. The cyclamen seem to have done well this year. Nice to see the snowdrops too. We've been doing a birdwatch count for RSPB but haven't seen that many birds over the last few days. Perhaps the cat that visits wants a romance with Bella, after all February 14th isn't far away.....Nice blog Hywel.

28 Jan, 2019

So do I Hywel sunny here today but very cold I would rather have a nice Spring Hywel.

28 Jan, 2019

I hope you see some birds Linda, thanks for your comment.

I want a nice spring too Thruppenybit :)

28 Jan, 2019

😊 I knew you would after the last Spring we did nt have Hywel.

28 Jan, 2019

:) x

Your blog made me think about the Spring, Hywel ! But now there are snow warnings !
I was looking forward to seeing what bulbs would appear in this new garden , only to be disappointed as the last person who lived here had put thick groundsheet like membrane and covered it all with gravel around every single shrub and other plants. What a shock I got when putting my spade in to plant one of my shrubs. So..my big job now is to gradually cut into it all so that I can start to landscape this garden . Going to be a long job. At least I am pleased I brought a lot of bulbs with me and put them in pots !

Thank you Rose, Good luck with your garden.
