For the love of......

Tulips, they have become my favourite spring bulb, it used to be daffodils and whilst I still adore daffs, tulips have more colour, that has won me over, also I adore their form and the way they change shape and age.

I cannot get enough of them, this year I grew most of the new ones in pots because I can no longer do the digging and planting entailed to put them in the ground. Also I think they will do better in pots as I cannot lift and replant them.

I am a bit cross with the weather this spring, it means the all my tulips were out together and despite some early and some late varieties, they are nearly all past their best. The tulips in the back garden have faired better than the ones in the front, as the front is much hotter with only a few spots of shade.

Apart from the species, tulips start with Kaufmanniana tulips flowering from early march onwards, these are short stemmed and their leaves are brown striped. Next are the Greigii tulips flowering from march to April, these also are short stemmed. Then come the Fosteriana tulips with large flowers on short stems flowering from early to mid April. I do not grow any of these three types at the moment but plan to include these for next year.

Single early start my garden off in early April lasting to late April. My varieties are Purple Prince, Apricot Beauty, White Marvel and Yokohama.

Next to flower are Triumph tulips, these are one of my favourite groups, mid to late April. I have Negrita (purple), Couleur Cardinal,Jan Reus (dark red), Cairo (burnt orange), and Helmar (red/yellow).

Then comes the Fringed tulips, Lambada and Burgundy Lace, flowering from late April to mid May.

Darwin tulips come next, flowering from late April to early May. Ivory Floradale And Ollioules.

Next come my absolute favourites Lily flowered. Marilyn white flamed red maturing to pale yellow, Mariette, deep satin rose, Red Shine, West Point primrose and orange Ballerina.

Then the Parrot tulips are next, this is the year I have tried these and I am pleased with Rococo.

Lastly come the Single late tulips, Menton, china rose with light orange stripes, Angel’s wish ivory fading soft primrose yellow, Violet Beauty, Lavender violet, Perestroyka, deep rose red and Pink Diamond which came out white with spotting pink, a bit of a disappointment.

I hope you enjoyed seeing them as much as I enjoy growing them, so now I am planning for next year, sweet joy!

Happy gardening folks!!

Here are some pictures of the front and back gardens so you can see where the tulips are, I still don’t like some areas but growing tulips in pots really helps as you can put them wherever. Thanks for your interest.

This is the back garden.

And this is the front garden.

Lovely tulips and now next year!!!!!!!!!

This is a lovely blog, Lemondog! I was at a tulip festival in NI, a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't resist ordering loads for next year! I'm going to put mine in pots too, it's so I can drop them into borders, or move them around, and then I can hide them away while they die down! I can't wait! Thanks for naming yours as well, I'm putting it on my favourites so I can refer back to them, or just have a drool, looking at your lovely pics! Thank you!

Lovely blog, Lemondog.
I am gradually building up the range of tulips that I grow in my garden but have very few compared to you. Do you grow them in different areas of the garden so that the focus changes during Spring or do you have an area devoted to tulips?
