New Book

I’ve just gotten a new garden book from, and I wanted to tell you about it. It is called “The Garden at Hidcote” by Fred Whitsey, published in 2007 by Frances Lincoln, superb photographs by Tony Lord.

Besides the sumptuous photos, the book is outstandingly written, and of particular interest is the story of Lawrence Johnston, creator of the magnificent garden at Hidcote Manor. The book is also devoted to the design and to the planting as well, and gives a vivid account of a tour of the garden in minute horticultural detail. A real gem.

For anyone not familiar with Hidcote, this masterpiece of gardening has influenced greatly how we garden today, on any scale. I have never been to Hidcote. And I learn in the book that it is located very near another famous and influential garden, Kiftsgate. Oh you English have it so good! I am green, really green, with pure envy!

But I DID once manage to visit Sissinghurst, and it was on a glorious day in the month of May, and I’ll never forget it.

You remind me of the occasion I drove many miles to visit Hidcote only to find it was closed (doh...always check first).
