Wentworth Woodhouse & Wentworth Garden Centre

On Tuesday we had a wonderful visit to Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire.
The house is one of the finest and grandest Georgian houses in England.
The first thing that hit us was the wonderful appearance of the building lit up by the blazing sunshine.
We had booked a Wentworth Tour which incorporated rooms on the ground floor and first floor of the house. approx. 12 rooms. THe guide Robert who took us around was excellent and very knowledgeable. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take photos of the inside as it is private property.

Here some of the photos I took outside I hope you enjoy them.

This is the first view of the house.

The Garden Centre

A large part of the Garden centre occupies the site of the former kitchen garden complex, built in the mid 18th
century by the Fitzwilliams of Wentworth Woodhouse.

These are photos of the Garden.

Are we lost or where do we go ?

This unusual feature of the gardens is the ‘Bear Pit’ when we went inside we thought it was an Ice House!

Nice gardens, that's a lovely wooded area with the ferns and the bear pit is quirky.

That's a wonderful place and I'd no idea we had something like that so close to where we live. I shall have to put it on my 'must visit' list.

I was born in Wentworth and lived in the village until 1959 approx. so saw the house and the park areas most of my life. The garden centre is amazing, lovely place to visit. When I was a young girl we watched cricket and held our village sports up on the grounds which is now the car park of the garden centre. We played on the land alongside the beautiful church and played in the woodlands. The house was used as a teacher training centre, Lady Mabel College, I remember the students walking around in fantastic red capes. Lots of memories of my life in the village. Go back to the g.c. occasionally the restaurant is very nice and lovely food served even if you have to stand for 30 minutes sometimes at busy times to order, but so quick and friendly service. Glad you had a good tour and visit to my old stomping ground. You would like Wentworth Castle which is a short distance from Wentworth near Barnsley the gardens are amazing and the last time I went up to look they were talking of re-furbishing the old glass conservatory at the back of the house, do hope they have managed to get the money together to sort it out. Well worth a visit and the gardens are stunning.

Thanks for all your comments .
Oliveoil you were very lucky to have lived in Wentworth when you were a child . It really is a lovely village so well preserved.
Whilst we were in the Garden Centre I bought a book titled
The Big House and the Little Village. It is a picture history of Wentworth and and Wentworth Woodhouse. If you haven't seen it you may able to get it from your local Library.

One of my best friends went to Lady Mabel College, she loved her time there.

I would love to still live there, I loved it there, hated it moving into a big town, but we had to go where our parents took us I suppose. The houses have never changed, there used to be a blacksmiths forge when I was a kid can remember watching the man working there. The school was so small and had a big wall around the playground and we loved kicking a football and playing king pin ball etc. Not many t.v. sets in those days so we played outside and were as fit as fleas. lol.
