Rejuvenation of a new border.

We have wanted to do this for a long time……over the last 20 years the front border has been so time consuming and we have reached the point at which it had to be done! The shrubs were enormous,as you will see in the first photos….30 years old, always needing to be trimmed with risky step ladders involved!Age has succumbed.
This has given us a large border crying out to be planted.Luckily,a few of my potted shrubs will be ideally suited there and with plenty of composted manure should have a good start.

We had a wooden 5foot fence erected…..ideal for the beautiful climbing rose “The Yorkshire lad”…..
Looks a little sparse at the moment, but I don’t want to make the mistake from before of planting too much.

The Fatsia was crying out to be unleashed from its pot.Now it has all it requires……bought an Olive /bush and a Pineapple Broom (Argyrocytisus battandieri yellow tail) today…..the broom has beautiful yellow racemes.

Have included a few photos to show the changes.

Hope it makes looking after it a bit easier - lots of us seem to be reaching the stage when that's a good idea! But your garden still has that lovely relaxed peaceful feel about it and now you have some space to "play" again...

It certainly will Stera.... No more expense either.... Trying to make this garden a little easier... My fault, planted far too much when we came here. Many thanks for your kind comment.

well it comes to all gardens I think. some of my areas [20yrs old] need a review and some serious pruning.
I like the look of your revamped border, very peaceful and calm.

There was one on Beechgrove this morning. Looked as though it needed a lorry to take away all the cuttings !
Good strong lad beavering away with the secateurs.
Good advice re pruning large bushes anyway, its on the
fact sheet if you want to have a look.

Will take a look at that Diane.... We needed 2 lorry loads to be taken away. Quite a big job.

It's hard to see it's the same space! You'll have to try not to over-plant as you did before. It's an affliction to which we plant lovers are very prone! I do it all the time!

I will certainly try to restrain myself. Pb.Since that photo there are 2more introduced.

Looking good......what a job!! its hard not to over plant though, I don't like to see too much bare soil, well thats my excuse!! but things grow fast in the South don't they? did you buy A Shropshire Lad?

Yes,Angela…..just pm you! I agree about bare earth....will have to cover with some bark and only a few more shrubs!!!!

It's a nice wide border. It's going to look lovely when the new planting has matured :)

Thanks Hywel... Can't wait... Seems to have lightened the garden somewhat... The shrubs were a solid wall.

Good idea, J, to make these alterations and improvements. Will be less work for you in the future, and is going to develop nicely.

I was always looking out on a wall of impenetrable shrubs TT... It was a larger job than we thought.... The trunks were enormous. Just finished laying the bark today... One more shrub, a Choysia I think. A few of the shrubs were already here in Pots but looked as though they needed to be planted out.

Nice to make some changes in the garden. It is indeed very hard work taking out established shrubs .. the roots and trunks are always much tougher than you'd imagined. Good to move shrubs from pots into the ground to see if they grow even better.
