Sinningia cardinalis - Cardinal Flower

Sinningia cardinalis - Cardinal Flower (Sinningia cardinalis - Cardinal Flower)

This Cardinal Flower is growing in the Botanical Building in Balboa Park, CA. I've always read this plant dies down and goes dormant in winter...however, I've never seen this plant do this. I've currently read "stems deciduous, but dormancy may be facultative. Some plants retain stems through the winter". Photo taken Feb. 16, 2010.

My sinningia I bought this fall went dormant but never died back and is now growing new shoots. All depends on how cool they get I think.

I'm convinced you're correct.

It's so strange though...plant people say this plant "must go dormant in matter how warm the climate". However, this plant is 4+ feet tall and I've never seen it go dormant. It also seems to bloom all year.

At my questioning, I was recommended putting it somewhere cool to force it into dormancy. I've chosen to keep it going since it is actively growing. I'll keep you posted but I think it's going to be fine. I hope it adapts to bloom more often as you say. That would be wonderful.

This posted plant grows in the Botanical Building which is a big lath house. It has not heating nor protection from cool weather...except for the laths which protect it from the hot sun. It is native to Central American tropical rain forest, so I assume it would grow all year there.
