Alocasia 'calidora' - Persian Palm

Alocasia 'calidora' - Persian Palm (Alocasia 'calidora' - Persian Palm)

My friend's 3 year old Persian palm. I purchased one at the same time. My friend's Alocasia is almost 12 feet/ 4 meters tall...I'm embarrassed to say how tall my plant is...

This plant looks smaller than it actually is...there's 4 or 5 steps up to the front porch to the right.

Yes, they can grow even larger than this specimen. This plant was put into the ground in late summer of 2008, if I remember correctly.

Hello Lori:

Generally Colocasia species go dormant in winter (in most climates - except tropical or warm subtropical). They re-sprout in spring.

I just removed a groundcover in the front yard. I had Xanthosoma sagittifolium (Giant arrowleaf elephant's ears) growing in this spot years ago. Now that I've been giving the new plants in this area water the Xanthosoma sagittifolium have started growing again...I actually thought the tubers were all dead.

were you consciously trying to remove them, D1. such an interesting group of plants. I love mine and I shall try to keep this new start going ok.
I remember your photo of the Xanthosoma which were a very dark green with light veining...looked gothic!

No, the groundcover just took over the whole area. Now that I've removed the groundcover and put in sod it's growing again (especially with all the water I've been giving the new grass).

Yes, Xanthosoma sagittifolium becomes a gigantic plant here...its trunks can grow to more than 6ft/2m tall and the leaves are immense.

Here's some of my previous pics:

Was just looking at your pics, D1....Now that I have a greenhouse I'm hoping to extend the growing season for my Colocasia, Cannas and Castor Bean...will have a little bit of the tropics in one corner of the garden next summer!

Yes, I'm sure the greenhouse will extend you growing season...the plants will love it .
