Firespike is a pretty commonly grown shrub in semi-shaded area. This one of thousands growing at the San Diego Zoo. Photo taken Oct. 27, 2010.

Thanks! I'll have to get some cuttings from my neighbor.
I have odontonema callistachyum - Purple-pink Firespike growing in the front yard...it's even more spectacular in bloom.
