Love your photo Scotsgran, I have just ordered a collection of 8 of these Heucheras, all different varieties. They are so attractive with all the different coloured leaves. I understand from a comment on anothers members page, that you have a 'STELLA' cherry tree, and wondered if you could give me a little bit of information on it. Are they OK to plant in a tub on the patio and also is the fruit sweet? How tall do these grow. I noticed you said in your comment that they are self fertile, that's a bonus isn't it? Do they fruit well? Thankyou Scotsgran and hope you dont mind me asking.

Hi Lins congratulations on catching the heuchera bug. I love them look forward to seeing your new arrivals.
Stella cherry is grafted on to various rootstocks depending on the size of the bush or tree you have space for. I wanted a bush about 8' x 8' and it flowered in February so needed to be self fertile because it was so early. I learned to tolerate the wasps in the garden because they appeared before the bees and did a good job of going round the flowers spreading the pollen between the blooms. Self fertile means it fertilizes itself but you still need the bees or wasps to travel over it. The flowers were always glorious and we got a huge crop of dark red very sweet cherries which we vied with the blackbirds to eat, straight from the tree. Some of the big companies do sell smaller Stella on different rootstocks which are suitable for growing in patio pots. I believe for the size of tree you will get a big crop of cherries. I got rid of my Stella because when our NFH built a huge house next door the tree blossom failed to open because it got no sun. No sun, no flowers and no fruit. I planted 2 eucalyptus trees to blot them out and try and give us some privacy. I will be planting another Stella soon. I will go for a slightly smaller bush version next time and plant it in a sunny spot. Hope this helps.

Thankyou Scotsgran for all the info, It certainly helps a lot. I will definately look around for a 'Stella'. Sorry to hear about the NFH building that house and blocking your sunshine, Its awful when they do things like that and spoil your privacy. Some people just think of themselves these days and don't give an ounce of thought for others. It's a real shame, but thats the way of life these days, it certainly isn't like it used to be......
