Unusual Moth or Butterfly

I saw this moth or butterfly today. It is so exotic looking, I couldn't believe it when I saw it injured on the road in Aberdeenshire. I picked it up and put it onto a flower after asking my hubby to take this picture. Has anyone seen one like this in their garden?

I felt so sorry for it, with one of its wings broken it kept falling onto its back. I would have loved to have taken it home to take care of it. It was so beautiful and bright and kept holding onto my finger.
