It's pretty small: They can grow to 50ft/16m tall...although, it may take several centuries. It grows painfully slow.

It must have been standing in that garden a long time then! One of nature's better efforts! How wide would you say the trunk was? I thought they were protected and it is illegal to take them from the desert habitat. So you couldn't just stop along a highway and grab a few small ones!

Most likely it was moved to the garden (this cactus is not native to the Coachella Valley or this part of the Colorado Desert - it's native the the eastern Colorado Desert which is in south eastern California and Arizona). This cactus can be moved only with a special they're very protected in the wild.
