Cypripedium reginae - 2012

By Andrewr

Cypripedium reginae - 2012 (Cypripedium reginae)

This is the 'Showy Lady's Slipper Orchid' from North America. It needs moist, fertile, leafy, humus-rich soil (preferably acidic) in dappled or part shade. Slugs love it.
This plant has been in intensive care since Monday when the heavy rain bent the stem in half but the flower bud has opened in time for the Open Garden on Sunday.

Do you leave yours out for the winter?

Good luck for the open day.

Yes Meanie, it's in the lee of a flowering crab apple so protected from the worst of the winter weather

I look at them, but worry that it's a lot of money to risk.

I know what you mean. I bought it two years ago and never saw it last year (too dry?). So I was very pleasantly surprised when it came up this year and flowered for me.

We pays our money and takes our chances.

My challenge this year is to grow Iochroma australis from seed large enough to try in a sheltered spot for most of the winter. I know of someone in Kent who has found it to be fully hardy............
