Yes, it is hard to believe it is so new. The rain has really helped to make some plants lush. My foliage plants are doing well, it's flowers that I've lacked this year.

Very nice and lush! Which plants are tropicals?

Now Delonix, you know we can't really grow tropicals outdoors here! We have a 'style' which we call 'tropical' because it uses plants with large lush leaves and hot coloured flowers. It 'reminds' us of the tropical places we've seen and loved and longed for! :)

Karensusan63:

I know some people grow the tropicals outside there as annuals or bring them indoors. I'm not familiar with any of these plants (maybe I just can't see them very well. lol).

Maybe I'm so used to seeing the really tropical/subtropical plants, trees I have in my garden and see throughout San Diego. :>)

Well yes, that's true, we can put them out and bring them in when it's cold....and I know Dotty does do that in her conservatory....lets see which really tender beauties she has here....Dotty? I tried to overwinter a Datura one year...but what an ugly stump of a thing that is to have all winter in your conservatory! ;)

Delonix Karen is correct, the term tropical border is used very loosely for large lush foliage, sorry the picture is not too clear !! we are growing a Melianthus Major, Phormium Yellow Wave, Fatsia variegata, and a lovely Eucalyptus, and a yellow Cotinus, also just hidden is a 55 million year old rock!! now you don't see those very often do you?
Karen we have to over-winter 3 Brugmansias, 3 large bananas, 4 colocasias, and a partridge...........sorry could not resist that!! and about 50 succulents, and 3 palm trees....... we have bitten the bullet this year and chanced some of them in the ground only time will tell.....

Dottydaisy2:

Yes, you definitely have a different definition of what tropicals are than me. lol! The plants you listed are all very hardy plants.

Most likely all the plants you use as strictly houseplants there...would be considered outdoor plants here.

Good luck with all your plant outside this winter. I hope you have a very mild winter!

Yup, we're all hoping for one of those Delonix! :)

Karensusan63:

From what I've read, the last two winters have been very harsh...so, I'm guessing you're due for a nice mild winter. :>)

There's always hope, but it has gone very cold very early this year, so that's not the most encouraging of signs! I'm keeping my wellies close at hand!

I am not holding my breath either........

That's too bad it's starting out so cool, so far this season for you all. I'll send you some of the horrible heat we've been having here in inland San Diego...it's driving me nuts! Today it was 100ºF (38ºC).
