Skimmia Japonica 'Magic Marlot'

Skimmia Japonica 'Magic Marlot'

Position: partial to full shade
Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
Rate of growth: average
Flowering period: April to May
Flower colour: white
Other features: male plant
Hardiness: fully hardy

A colourful evergreen that forms neat mounds of variegated, green and cream foliige. In autumn rounded clusters of white buds appear, and these remain on the plant throughout the winter, turning deep red as they mature and finally opening in spring to fragrant, creamy white flowers. It is useful for creating year-round interest in the border, or for filling a medium sized pot.

Garden care: Lightly trim after flowering, if necessary. To improve the moisture retention qualities of the soil add plenty of well-rotted compost when planting.

I have this one they are a lovely little plant .....

This has to be the slowest growing Skimmia I have ever grown, all our others are romping away, some nearly 5 ft now, but it is such a corker that it is worth waiting....

I lost the first one I bought in 2010. It claims to be fully hardy, but they are more vulnerable when small in pots I guess. This one is a good size, and it was 20% off at one of my GCs here, so as Ive been wanting to try again, I decided to go for it. I think I'll plant it in the soil later.

I love these but they are very pricey at my local gcs :o)

Lovely .. but, as Annie says ... expensive ! :o)

Hellebores are dear aren't they. This one at B&Q not too bad...but tbh I can't remember exactly how much. Not as expensive as they usually are though!

OH, good grief, I'm talking about the wrong plant! Yes, very expensive. This one £8 as it was discounted, and it is quite large too, so much better value. Usually they want £8 for a tiny one.

That is a real bargain, I've not seen a decent size one under £15.00 here.

I think you know that I've got this, too - it is a dwarf Skimmia, Dd, so don't expect it to grow much bigger, will you! Karen, you got a bargain there... :-0))

Thanks Spritz, I do like a bargain! If you remember, I had a tiny one a couple of years ago, but it perished in that dreadful winter....or perhaps it was the year before. anyway, this one is looking ok after a very cold night last night, so I am hopeful.
