This is such a pretty shrub. I would think it would be a good substitute for rhododendron if the soil is alkaline .
It is evergreen.
It was stripped by deer very badly but recovered nicely. It took pruning well...so I suspect that it can be kept under control.
There is a smaller version (slower growing) shrub called "Ballerina "

Oh yes, too big for inside Homebird. :-(
I know Dottydaisy grows it. Do you live far from her? In different zone? Mine is in protected spot but not in full sun.

For long time Homebird. It blooms in stages. It has lots of buds which open gradually. The leaves are leathery and quite attractive.
