Me too Brian. But they are wiser to keep out if we do indeed have a resident Weasel! Lucky you Linda!

This is one of two that live in two of our hedgehog homes that Gerry made. We have just cleaned them out with some fresh straw. They are both taking mouthfuls of fresh straw from the empty house back to their own homes. We think they might be going to reproduce. If they do I will try to get some pictures. They do say that if you see a hedgehog out during the day there is something wrong with it usually. These two look fit and well and are eating and drinking well too. They have mealworms, peanuts and cat biscuits, they also like the pink suet bird pellets with the insects in too, and there is always plenty of fresh water for them to drink.

The Hedgehogs must love your garden Lindak and no wonder it sounds like a first class Hedgehog Hotel lol We do ave them but very rarely come out during the day, they seem to prefer a warm summers evening in my garden;0)

Hi PP Gerry had to put a wooden barrier underneath the gate as the Badgers have been in the area and have visited our garden, so this has stopped them, there is enough room one end for the hogs to get through.

Hats off to you, you sound to have created hedgehog heaven. I do hope you get some babies (not sure what they are called) there's a shortage of hedgehogs.

When we had lots of them in our town garden they woke up while it was light and crackled their way through the shrubbery to see what was on offer from me. Then either amused themselves courting or shoving and huffing or circling a female in the borders or out under the side gate to get flattened if not careful. Alas I see no dead ones for many a year nor alack any live ones, which is so sad. In the winter they stashed up in wonderfully constructed nests under leafy plants in a semi neglected border. Once there were 3 of them in a row! I hope yours have babies Lindak. We had lots of tiny ones one year running around people's feet at a party in the garden and feeding on the patio.

They have lots of funny little habits don't they Dorjac. They certainly make a lot of noise when the males are courting the females. Apparently the babies don't stay very long with their parents. They have to build themselves up for the winter months in hibernation. I'm sure if any are in trouble we would look after them.

never expected the hedgehogs to get so rare Lindak, so we took very few pictures of them. they just seemed part of our garden inhabitants. Lots of them running about the streets at night too. On spring watch they said 95% fall in numbers in the last 20 years.

If only people would make a small hole at the bottom of their fence from garden to garden so the hogs can roam would be a start.

WE use to have them in our garden until we had to dig wire deep into the surrounding edges to keep the rabbits out I miss them coming in :o(

That's a shame Amy. Rabbits can do a lot of damage. Pity you can't have a hedgehog or two on the inside of the fence linked to other gardens in your area.

I'll have to kidnap a couple Linda we only have fields round the garden ...

If you have a very large garden with lots of different areas for them they should be o.k. as long as you feed them and give them some water and a home. They usually need about the space of 9 - 12 gardens to roam over. There are several websites to have a look at one being Miss Tiggywinkle. If you typed in hedgehogs though I expect there would be plenty there.

You're doing a brilliant job, Linda, and the hedgehogs seem to appreciate it. My front garden is accessible to anything that roams but the back has to be secure because of the tortoises.

Thanks Gee. We've noticed one having a scar over her nose, and she goes into one box, but we've seen another with the same type of marking going into another so we reckon there are two with very similar markings.....Perhaps genetic?
