Veg. garden - I love this so much! :)

Veg. garden - I love this so much! :)

I do need to get my beans tied in though :) The greenhouse is full of tomatoes and the first one is turning red already.

Do you think children's windmills would help keep Wood pigeons from stomping in my floral borders?

Crikey.....red tomatoes? I haven't even got a green one yet!
Is that beans (runners/French) by the poles?? I've given up after 4 sowings and not a single plant germinated. The ground has been so wet and cold this year!

I'm afraid Siris , I don't think they would!

I don't think they do either. Once the birds have discovered your larder they just can't resist it. So far we haven't had any .....ooooh...shouldn't have said that.....eeeeeeek! Paul, I have germinated French climbing this year but they are so slow. They haven't moved since I planted them out at the start of the month. I fear they will fail again. They are tricky ..need warmth. I have ordinary runners that look a lot more promising, and some dwarf french which have already produced a few beans. They are in the pots at the front of this pic. My tomatoes are doing fabulously well this year Paul. I am growing a very early variety called 'Latah' and that's the red one. I'm only growing bush varieties this year, and they are almost all fruiting already. I am so looking forward to eating them...I love tomatoes! :))

It's climbing French beans that I always grow but they just haven't germinated this year!

Probably too Cold Paul. They are very tricky up here. I just watered mine and noticed that with the warm couple of days we've had, they've actually started to pick up well. I hope it continues! They are so much better than Runner Beans.

Yes, I have only ever once grown runners....always the climbing French bean types but, none this year!

Is it too late to buy plants though?

26 Jun, 2016

Well, I don't really like to buy the plants so I'll just go without now. I have actually put a few Calabrese plants that I had left over in that space now and sowed some more lettuce..

Excellent idea. Funny isn't it? I'm not keen on buying plants either, somehow it feels like 'cheating'. But this year I bought cabbages and beans because the veg. garden was a recent idea, and I was too late to sow seed. But I might just buy plants in future because it's so much cheaper when you thing of all the compost (and time and effort) you need to grow from seed. But tomatoes are best from seed I think because I like to try different varieties.

You are right, Karen........it probably does work out cheaper. But, it's very satisfying, isn't it, seeing them grow from seed!

It is. :)
