Comma

Comma

I commented on Diane's blog today that I had only seen whites and a couple of meadow Browns this year. But, this afternoon, I saw this Comma flitting between my Verbena Bonariensis plants!!

I like the contrasting color scheme you have going there. Did you plan it or did is just happen?

Not wanting to boast Paul but, the borders were all planned and planted just last year so yes it was planned. I brought a few Verbena Bonariensis with me in pots from my last garden and I wanted to combine them and some of my other flowering plants that I brought with me with lots of ornamental grasses to give what I hope is a very contemporary scheme.
To be fair, I realise it would not appeal to lots of gardeners but it was a vision I had and I'm pleased with how it's maturing just one year on.
Ha ha....sorry for the long reply!

I also much prefer the naturalized look over the impeccably manicured garden. I almost always go with local native plants over the exotic. They just do better and require minimal attention from me.

Well, I do have a lot of other plants too but I certainly had to search out plants suitable for our conditions as we have a very wet, part shaded area. Also, our soil is heavy clay.
I was inspired by a few gardens I've visited over here over the last few years and just love the way the garasses blow around and the borders can look different each time you look.Sometimes an ornament or another plant will be showing, others not....depending on the wind etc and they way the late afternoon sun hits the seed/flower heads at this time of the year is stunning!
Yes, like you, I think I like a natural(to a degree) look and something maybe a bit different to the norm.

How funny you should see that Comma after Diane's blog! I had a very dark Butterfly fly into the kitchen, gone as quick as it came in so no idea what variety, but good to see all the same.

Yes, it thought it was funny Shirley.
He/she stayed for ages on all the verbena Bonariensis flowers.

Great capture Paul. Are you doing the Big Butterfly thing where you tell the conservationists what you see? I did it a few days ago with just a measly Meadow Brown, 2 small whites and a small tortoiseshell :(

No, I haven't seen anything about that Sheila. But, same here, wouldn't be a lot to report.
