Sandra, a couple of years ago I had this idea of putting in a 'rustic' wood pergola the whole length of that border either side of the current arch. It may have to happen yet!!!
Marjories has just posted a blog, she also has a Rambling Rector rose .....

I wanted to put a rambling rose over our 'arch' but was advised by the GC only to use metal arches as the wood ones eventually rot at the base...oh dear I hope I haven't put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Not always the case Waddy, most folk put the wood arch bases in concrete for stability. Or those Metpost doo-dahs!!
Can you tell I don't do the heavy work??

That's a point Shirley. My OH tends to do the heavy work too!

I think this is the variety which is in the paper today. It grows in the church yard of St Mildred's Church in Tenterden, Kent and is 30ft Tall and 30ft Wide...be warned Shirley lol!
