Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana Flowering

Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana Flowering (Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana Flowering)

The Royal Poinciana trees in San Diego are flowering so beautifully in the very hot weather we've had over the last 7 weeks. Photo taken on Aug. 10, 2018.

Thanks to that tree the people on this block have a premium parking site. Looks like it gives lovely thick shade along with the glorious flower show.

Yes, it provides a lot of dense shade. It grows like an umbrella. The flower show in stunning! It's considered by many people the most beautiful flowering tree in the world.

That's a famous tree for being one of the oldest Royal Poinciana in San Diego right? Wasn't even planted by the city. A home owner long passed away planted it I think it was.
Its got a hefty trunk on it. Its middle aged!

This tree was planted in the late 1999, from what the neighbor told me. It's definitely not the oldest tree here. The two much larger trees at the San Diego Zoo were planted in 1992. Unfortunately, because of large street-type light planted next to them they never flower (because of photoperiodism).

The seed for this tree was brought here from Acapulco, Mexico from I remember. This tree is so spectacular right now. I wish I could do a 360º pic of this tree! It still has so many buds on the top of this tree. It's been so extremely hot and humid should be flowering for a while.

1999? Do you know Andy, now that I mention it..what is or are the oldest Poinciana's going in San Diego? I would guess they didn't even try them until the mid or late 80's? They had the super tropical label put on them.

There's some that were planted back in the 1970's in private gardens. The first impressive D. regia was one that saw in Vista back in 2000.

I know Mardy Darian (who passed-way in 2015) had many old D. regia trees in his garden since the late 70's or early 80's. He had one of the most spectacular 3 acre Palm Gardens in San Diego County, maybe even in the U.S.

Somewhere in all my photos on GoY I have a pic of the large D. regia at Fullerton Arboretum which was planted in 1988.

Trivia..sort of. I know I saw where the Hawaiian King in 1900 gifted the tree's to San Francisco for the World Expo.
They planted them in Golden Gate Park..where they just petered away.
Maybe if they had planted them in the Mission District up against a hot wall, who knows what might have happened?

It's highly unlikely they would have survived the 1932 freeze. It's very interesting that they even planted them at all there in San Francisco. It's really not the cold that kills them, it's the cold, wet soil in winter. Because, of course, San Francisco very rarely ever gets frost.
