Great growing Andy. Crotons are a hard grow. I have in 20 years of internetting seen only three people growing them in California..you,Len of "married to plants" blog and Epicure in San Diego..all of you in that area. Not a single poster from Santa Barbara- Los Angeles area. Dave near Los Angeles has posted he's tried, they live one winter and then die by fading away. I've noticed that myself.
Also, growing the hardy Crotons that are green with only a splash of one color like yellow? doesn't really count. They might as well be Aucuba.

Very pretty leaf variegation. Interesting info too, from Stan.

Stan,

Yes, it’s not such an easy grow in most of California. San Diego has the mildest and warmest average winter temps in the state. I’ve seen many here, they do need regular watering all year or they will die!

In south Florida they grow very well even in their dry season. I’m guessing all the extreme humidity prevents transporation of their leaves.

Kate,

They’re grown for their highly variegated leaves. It’s a little temperamental about the lighting. It needs enough sun, but too much hot sun will bleach the leaves here.

Thanks Andy, it’s a beauty. Those leaves are striking. You’ll be ensuring it’s leaves don’t have too much exposure then.

It’s in a perfect spot where it gets a lot of filtered sun. It’s been in the same spot for many years (probably 9 years).

We've had a run of sun and low to mid 60's..but it looks like the storm door is opening and it's going to be rainy into the New Year.
I have Bottle Palms I have grown from seed.I bring them in every winter..but no room now. On the porch later. At least keep them dry in the cool temps. Crotons?..not sure.
So far, nothing lower than one 39f. This is looking to be the third frost free winters in a row. I've never seen that happen.

It was 76 degrees here on Christmas Day. It’s going to get pretty chilly and rain on Monday, though.

We set a modern record with a 65f on Christmas day and there was some rain..wild.

That’s crazy! It used to always be pretty cold on Christmas.
