Orchid phalaenopsis

Orchid phalaenopsis

This was given to me yesterday but I have no idea how to care for it! Any help would be gratefully received.

It’s a beauty! Love the colour, Shirley.. I’m not great with house plants, but, someone on here will have the right answer!
My neighbour gave me a ‘small flowering’ orchid a few months ago and OH looks after it.

Basically don't let it sit in wet for hours. Water thoroughly and drain. And not in full sun in my experience. They're easy to look after. This is a pretty one.

That's a very mellow colour, Shirley.so attractive... I feel very much happier with the artificial one I bought last year....just haven't been able to be successful with the real ones...

Kate, I have placed it on an East facing windowsill and left it in the plastic pot.

Oh thanks Anget, I have to admit it's a plant I've never been tempted to buy for myself!

Julia, I hope I manage to keep it going. If not I shall have to buy an artificial one too!

I should have said give it a misting often, too.

Thanks Anget, I shall endeavour to remember to do that!

Shirley, ours is on a south facing window, although it’s mostly blocked by next doors garage - we have a path in between. It does get afternoon sunshine - although it’s in the corner of the window out of direct sunlight. I’m asking OH this as he has been looking after it!
Wishing you well with yours. 😊

Thanks Kate ... does he feed yours with any thing like Babybio? I was told yesterday by a friend that's what she does.

Shirley, my OH and I use to grow these for the show bench. The best advice I can give you is;
Don't put it in direct sunlight.
Water with tepid water, the best is rain water which has reached room temperature.
Don't let it stand in any water, but ensure it is fully drained.
It will appreciate a feed now and again with a suitable orchid feed. I'm not sure Babybio would be suitable as it is perhaps a little too strong.
I find our bathroom or kitchen window suits them best as they appreciate the damp.steamy atmosphere.
Good Luck :-)

Shirley, he doesn’t feed them at all, but his Mum feeds her very infrequently. I think Julia has given the best advice 😊

Julia, I bet you both enjoyed doing that!

Thank you so much for that helpful advice. I did water it yesterday, with tepid tap water, then drained it off. My question is, must it stay in that see-through plastic pot it came in?

Kate, I think you're right, great advice from a professional!!

I'm no professional Shirley!
You should leave it in a see through pot. Orchids such as this need light on their roots. In the wild their roots are exposed as the grow clinging to such as tree branches, in rain forests, another reason they don't like their roots sitting in water.
When you water it, watch for the roots turning green, then you know it's got enough water.

Thanks again Julia, it's amazing the help received on this lovely forum ... :o))
