Dimocarpus longan ‘Kohala’ - Longan or Dragon Eye Fruit Tree

Dimocarpus longan ‘Kohala’ - Longan or Dragon Eye Fruit Tree

My small 4 ft Kohala longan tree has flower spikes emerging (with new leaves) for the first time. I only purchased it last summer. It’s been loving all the hot weather here in San Diego, CA. I hope to get some fruit this year. Photo taken February 26, 2022.

I've never eaten Dragon eye fruit . Is it similar to lychee?

Klahanie,

It’s similar to lychee. I think it’s sweeter. I can eat 5 lbs a day when it’s in season. Lol!

Seaburngirl,

Longan is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. There’s many large, old trees here in San Diego. It’s a very ornamental tree like lychee.

We had a mature lychee tree in our last Mexican residence. It was a beautiful tree. No fruit though. Maybe a wrong time of the year?? November-March. I am sure I could eat 5lbs of the fruit as well.

Klanhanie,

Lychee and longan are summer fruit. These trees want dry and cooler weather to set the flowers. They technically don’t need chilling hours, as they’re tropical trees, but like some cooler weather when dormant.

That explains it. Thank you Delonix1.

Delonix1, I just posted picture of the lychee tree for Linda . She is growing one from a pit. It was in our last Mexican residence (rental) Very beautiful tree but can get very large.

Lychee trees become massive trees in time. The largest ones I’ve ever seen where growing in Hilo, HI. One year I was visiting family and friends in May and the massive trees in Hilo were loaded with fruit. They’re very ornamental.

How do they harvest fruit from such large lychee tree? The tree seems to be taller and wider for a ladder to reach.

I am happy for you (and little bit jealous) that you will get some longan fruit. Do you have any critters going after your fruit.?

You need a cherry picker or a very big ladder. Lol

The buds are just starting to flower. Hopefully, it’ll set some fruit! It’s an air-layered tree which I’m not sure long it’s been growing roots. If I get ten fruits I’d be happy. :))
