Oakleaf Croton

Oakleaf Croton (Codiaeum variegatum - Oakleaf)

My croton has grown very well during this past very hot and extremely humid summer (some morning lows were 85 to 88 degrees which is unheard of here). This plant absolutely loved it! I purchased this croton 14 years ago and it has been in this same spot for 12 years. Photo taken Oct. 26, 2022.

It has an attractive leaf variegated, Andy. You'll be pleased with the effects of the weather this year.

That's a great plant, Andy! Here in the UK they can only be grown indoors & never reach that sort of height or width! I've seen a few old ones over the years but they can't compare with yours! 😀

Envious, just cant get them to grow year after year here...they go into a slow decline even if frost protected.

It is actually getting way too much sun. This pic was taken in the evening. You can see on the right leaves which is under the lath-structure are nicer.

It’s getting hotter and more humid every year here in San Diego. I always say to people: This isn’t Miami, Florida! Lol!

I’ve seen them bigger in the ground here, but typically they stay between 3 and 6ft (1 to 2 meters) tall. In the wet tropics usually 5 to 10 ft (1.5 to 3 m) or taller.

I’ve tried several time to grow this variety up there, it never made it past December. I read this Oakleaf variety is extremely sensitive to cold. It’s strictly zones: 10b -11 (which is my USDA zone 10b bordering 11).

The Mammy croton variety is hardier, it shows 9b hardiness. Hayward is 10a, you should probably get that one to grow in a protected spot.
