This is a very handsome tropical fruit which is grown to a limited extent in Southern California. It is native to Southern Mexico through Central America.

It's becoming more available here. It's a little hardier than originally thought (to coolness not cold). It's still very tropical, though. It's just slightly less hardy than Chico Sapote (Manilkara zapota), from what I've read.
I'd love to grow this tree. It's extremely ornamental.

I know of somebody who's growing a Chicle tree in Hayward. Its growing well..hasn't flowered. He grew it from seed.
Things are so different here from at least the 1970's. I might as well try Petra Croton again. I got 2 years...lets go for 3 or 4 next.

The Chico Sapote has gotten really popular here. It's slow-growing; however, it will tolerate cool conditions as long as it's not freezing (I guess).
It would most likely stay smaller in Hayward, so it would be easy to protect.
Yes, try Mamey Croton. It's a good grower.
