Hi Daff, I had one of these visit my garden for the first time in 2 half years. As soon as i got the camera he had dissapeared, probably for another 2 and a half years.

My bird book say's "The Jay habitually skulks in the heart of woods and seldom ventures out."

This dosent look like the woods.

Thanks Janey, they are very striking birds.
Treesandthi.. this is my back garden, they seem to like the nuts that i put out for the other birds. merry Christmas to all xxx

Now I've looked at your great photo - we haven't seen ANY Jays here, but we used to get a lot in Kent. Strange, isn't it!

You were lucky to get this photo Daff. We see them occasionally but never close up like this.

Dawn, I don't know if to encourage or to discourage them, they come nearly every day.

Where abouts in Kent did you use live Spritz.

Hi Daff, they belong to the magpie family don't they - they are a beautiful bird. BB will know. I bet he'll find your photo later and give you some advice.

That would be good Dawn, I should hate to encourage them if they start scaring away the breeding birds in spring.

Sadly Daff as pretty as they look , member of the crow family and will quite happily take eggs and young birds . In fact probably their staple diet so wouldnt encourage them if you have jays avoid putting out meat scraps
as very partial to these.Often during winter looking for acorn nuts which they bury like squirrels but this only because other birds not breeding.

mmmmm thanks Bonkersbon, I will not encourage them, and shoo them away when i'm at home. It would be awful for the smaller birds to have their eggs taken.
Thanks.x

This is my favourite bird, it's a Jay. They are big birds aren't they. I always feel lucky when I see one. We have had one in the garden and a woodpecker and very scarily a kestrel which unfortunately killed two pigeons.

It took ages for the birds to come back, I bet they were very scared!

I local man keeps the kestrel and it must have escaped.

Thank goodness it has never happened again.

Janie :)

It is a lovely bird Janie, but when to breeding season is here, they will take eggs and young birds. That is nature.

Yes, nature is cruel. My neighbours where I used to live must have thought I was a bit crazy. One nesting bird was constantly being attacked by another and I kept rushing out banging my saucepan lids together. (Yes, I can just imagine what they thought!) Crazy woman!

Janie, you sound just like me, I'm the same with pigeons, they come and eat all the food that i put out for the smaller birds, so i chase them off, I tell myself that it's keeping me fit keep jumping up and waving my arms about. : )

Well at least I am in good company. You don't have to be crazy - but it helps! :0
