Garden pond

Garden pond

This pic shows the lovely lilies whick sadly were under attack from the dreaded lily beetle last year. I didn't have a single flower thanks to those little red button-like creatures! I will not be beaten by them and have planned on a surprise attack of my own this year with them!

this looks great. What is the grass growing right in the water, please?
And do you have to protect the goldfish?

Hi Weeding - I think the grass is
ACORUS Gramineus Variegatus.
It was bought from the aquatic shop when we got the fish. It's an evergreen, doesn't die down at all and grows quite rapidly, needs no real care or attention. I took it out of the pond last year - it's in a terracotta pot - the roots had grown out the bottom of the pot and in high wind made the pot a bit unstable. I split the clump and formed new plants which are not visible on this pic. They are easy to grow.
We have 3 cats but have never protected the fish from them as they don't bother with the pond. We've now got a pergola over the pond and it's covered in bamboo to shade them during the summer, I think this keeps the birds off too - we have a heron nearby but with the pergola in place, he doesn't have the space to land with his large wingspan, luckily. We've also built a new baby pond last year, just outside the conservatory mainly in the shade. We have goldfish and sherbunkins in the new pond. I popped in 2 waterlilies last year and they did really well. The lily pads provide shade and protection for the fish - we had lily pads in this big pond too but found the Koi liked to nibble them so they didn't do as well. Pics of the new pond are in my pic library on here.
