A garden flower photo (Lantana)

Comments on this photo

Lantana have the most beautiful little flowers. Unfortunately where I live - in North Queensland, Australia these are regarded as noxious weeds as they have taken over large areas of our bushland. We try to eradicate them but they are hard to get rid of. We don't even like to have them as pot plants because of the risk of them spreading.

Lantana cause bad rashes too. The rash last more than a month, depending on skin type.

I don't like the smell of lantana.

The nursery folks says that butterflies love lantana, so I keep them for the butterflies.

Actually I agree with you about the smell of them - not my favourite smell either! I have seen the butterflies being attracted by the lantana so I think the nursery people are correct.

All my lantanas have mealybugs. Somedays I spend 30 minutes drowning mealy bugs in dishwashing solution. Some days, I spend an hour. It's no joke smelling the lantana for 30 minutes to an hour.

I don't get many butterflies. Just occassionally.

I don't know if having these plants is a good idea or not after hearing about the bug problem - even if the flowers are so lovely.

The thing about lantanas is that, they flower constantly, and the colours are bright. And it doesn't matter if I forget to water, or lazy to water. But I keep my kids away from the plant because of the rash. My kids are 4 years and 3 years old. So, they don't understand.
