pop up waste paper bins out the pound shop , they asked me why I kept buying them hee hee , I put a few holes in the bottom of them , most of them are on their second year and still going strong.

This is a good idea. How many potatoes do you get from growing one in a bin? I haven't much garden now and this would be an idea to put some of these on the drive near the garage, but do the costs balance of buying the potatoes in the shops. I know as a gardener that nothing tastes better than a potato dug from your own garden, and I am going to grow some veggies in the small space that I have.

hi Lindak

the bins cost a pound each from the pound shop as expected (lol) ,I put a couple of holes in the bottom for drainage ,just a couple of holes as drying out is a bigger problem than waterlogging. Put acouple of inches of compost in the bottom then two seed potatoes then cover them over with another couple of inches ,once plant has grown every five inches or so cover it upwith more compost , the bins have lasted me two years so far and I reckon I should get another few years out of them before they fall apart , they take a fair bit of compost but when I harvest the potatoes I plant carrots in them and get a second crop , I also use the soil in my beds at the end of the year or the compost heap. When I pick the early potatoes they are still small and normally get about 2lbs of potatoes that are really nice flavour , as they grow I get a higher yield between three and four lbs

Thanks for the information I think if I can get the bins I shall plant a couple up and have a go. Home grown carrots in afterwards....yes I shall try that too Thankyou very much. You have inspired me.

oh what a fantastic 'pot' solution, they look better than old compost bags that i use. I turn them inside out as the black surface helps warm the soil up in the pot.

My little spuds are getting eyes on them I have five resting in an egg box near the window for light. COuldn't get any bins in the pound shops in Derby. I do have some large pots so I shall put one spud in each pot.
