Pipevine Swallowtail

Pipevine Swallowtail

This Pipevine Swallowtail is getting minerals from my gravel driveway after a rain. This swallowtail just started appearing in my yard the past few years. The Pipevine Swallowtail's major foodplant is Pipevines (Aristolochia) including ornamental vines and the native host A. durior, A. reticulata, and A. serpentaria. I'm trying to get this butterfly to stick around my gardens more often so this year I'm sowing aristolochia seeds. The blue on the topwing shines brilliantly when the sun hits it just right.
