why does my clematis keep dying

glasgow, Scotland Sco

this is the second time in about a month that it has got to a certain stage, lots of flower buds and then just starts to wither.

This sound very like Clematis wilt. It seems to be caused mainly by a fungus that invades the transport system of the plant, blocking the channels that take up water and minerals to the leaves which of course then wilt. At least that is what it is thought to be caused by!

By re-planting your clematis another 4-6ins deeper, this seems to help the plant. It's worth trying anyway before you sling it :-)

If you did plant it deep in the first place, cut all the stems back and be patient until next year. My 'President' wilted last year and I did this - it produced new shoots this spring. :-)

Yes, plant deep, with a cool shaded root run and sunshine at the top!
