Can I cut back some of the sky-facing branches on my apple tree now?

WORCS, United Kingdom Gb

These are non fruit bearing, almost vertical and I would have thought are robbing the better ones of energy and resources - but should I be cutting them back right now?

itt would be better in spring but as long as you do it properly i cant see it hurting to much

It is a good idea to replace some of the older branches with new wood from time to time. The new branches will bend over eventually. I cut out unwanted branches in September.

Summer pruning is fairly normal for apple trees. Cut back all new growth just above the 6th. leaf from the base cluster of leaves on laterals. Leave the extension growths from the ends of branchres alone until winter.
Finf out if your tree is a tip bearing type first otherwise you are removing the new fruit buds for next season.

How do I say thanks?
