Got a back lawn that gets swamped everytime it rains. Before I dig it up and replace I am going to try and aerate it and fill holes with sand. Is sharo sand good enough as horticultural sans seems a bit expensive ?

Do you mean sharp sand? if so yes you can. You can also hire an aerator to help you do this. If you dig up and replace your lawn it will soon return to the same condition unless you address the drainage problem at the same time?
Sometimes water like this when it rains is an affect of building or home improvements? Such as run off from a drive or patio if so that is where you need to look to improve the drainage not the actual lawn.
