Why do my spring onions not grow more than a 3 to 4 inches

By Gordy

Austria At

I have tried to grow spring onions for the last 3 years but they never grow more than about 3 inches high and never fill out. We now live in Austria at 1300 metres and our growing season is from June till about mid October. We grow tomatoes and most other salads O/K.

hello gordy!
Assuming the weather conditions where you are are similar to the UK, the only diagnoses i can offer is, potentially, they are spaced to close together and just need to be thinned out a little bit more so they have space to fill out! after trial and error i grow mine in a window box filled with general purpose compost and the majority of the seeds sprout, so i thin out drastically, use the thinnings like chives and then in a few weeks the remaining are looking good!
how do you grow yours?

I agree with monardamad spring onions need to be grown quickly so either fine soil in good nick or compost and a shelterd position, I grow them betwen other rows of plants.
