Can anyone tell me if I can cut this hard back now, as the leaves are all dead and brown and curled up, only planted a year ago!!!!! thanks

I think the stems look so colourful over winter, why not do it before new growth starts in Spring.

Heron is of course quite right. Why not leave the stems right through until the spring. That is one of the main features of this group of plants and they look great with the more side on, golden sunlight you get through autumn and winter showing up their stems.

Late spring is when I cut ours back, so that there is plenty of time for it to grow new stems to be colourful over the next winter. If you want flowers and berries on it, then do not cut back the stems at all.

How do I say thanks?
