wisteria sinensis

when to prune and how

This is a bit complicated and long winded so here goes:
1. Restrict the main stem to one or two growths only, take out the rest. Keep an eye on the main stems, quite often you find extra stems forming low down and growing up too, get rid of them.
2. When it has reached the height you want, cut out the growing tips on the main stem (not the side shoots).
3. Reduce all lateral growths (side shoots/branches) by half in August.
4. Reduce all lateral growths to about 2 buds (probably 6 -8 inches) from the main stem in February.
that's the recommended pruning method!
