My old pyracantha growing against a wall and over my front door blew down in gales last year and I sawed most of it off but have about 6 inches of thick woody roots left which I am having trouble removing (I am a female!). Could you advise me please. I also want to plant a new pyracantha in the same place, should I plant it in the autumn? Thank you

I have had a similar problem and the way I did it was to excavate the soil back [Time team would be proud] and cut through the roots with a pruning saw as I exposed them. A crow bar came in useful too but I didn't get them all out. As for planting in the same space I'd make sure you add plenty of fresh soil/compost to the soil where you want it to go.
