I need to a cheap option to fill some raised beds but I'm not sure what to use. I did originally look at a combination of topsoil and multi purpose compost however this seems quite expensive. A local garden center has suggested peat, manure and topsoil. Using Peat would be a lot cheaper but I'm aware it isn't environmentally friendly - does anyone have any suggestions?

Any compost...soil conditioner...well rotted manure....mixed with garden soil should do the job nicely....

'Soil Conditioner' from somewhere like B&Q is excellent, better for the environment than peat and could be even cheaper. Mix with, say, two parts soil.

Top soil and a trip to your local stables for some well rotted manure.

How do I say thanks?
