How to prune a Clerodendrum?

I have checked the RHS website on when to prune my clerodendrum, but it is not clear on exactly how hard I should prune and I don't want to go too far and spoil it, however it is now rather a large shrub and I don't want it to take over and get completely unruly. Any advice on how best to keep it in check please?

Update: Variety is Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii

Hi, do you know which species you have?, there are over 400 species, and 4 different pruning groups, so we can't really give you a definitive answer until we know the species, Derek.

Hi, thanks for the information, that makes it a pruning group 1, late winter or early spring while still dormant, Derek.

Thanks for the info Derek, however how hard should I prune - I don't want to go too far but I do want to keep it in check.

Hi, group 1 pruning usually means minimal pruning, just a bit of a tidy up, but you can cut out some branches that are crossing or rubbing another branch, take these out first, then take branches out of the centre to open it up, and then cut back remaining branches by up to a third, as it flowers on current years growth, there shouldn't be any problem, hope this helps, Derek.
