Very few of my strawberry runners have rooted themselves. These I have separated from the parent and are now potted up and safe in the cold greenhouse.
Can I separate some of the runners that have white nodules but not roots ? will they root OK ?
My old beds are too old and need removing .My ground needs work done before I can replant new babies.I would like to get new plants established whilst the weather allows.
Can someone kindly advise ?

ye you should be lucky with them. i cut them off and place them in a shallow dish (like what you buy a chicken on ) with water, they will grow roots, place your plants in pots with compost while your refreshing your plot.

I peg my runners down with a piece of wire bent over and pushed into the ground close to the young plant while they are still attached to the parent plant and when they have taken root I cut the runner and then pot them up in small pots of compost and then when the ground is made ready I plant them out.

I do a similar to thing to what John does. The only difference is that I peg the runners down into a small pot of compost as then I can plant them out at a later date without disturbing them too much.

Thank you very much for your helpful replies.I will have a go at every one of them. Can't wait to see if the ones with just nodules will give me good roots.

I grow mine in hanging baskets which presents a problem of finding room in the soil to peg down. What I do is take a bit of compost, put it in a 6 inch square of cling film, wrap it around the runner just under that plantlet and secure it with a small elastic band or some garden wire. They will root into the compost pretty quickly and I just cut the runners off, unwrap the cling film and plant them on into pots for next year. They do sometimes attract attention from people... Little plastic bags on stalks hanging down from the baskets with plants sticking out, haha.
