any recomendations for hardy architectural exotics to be placed in pots in north east facing garden in northern england.tried cordyline(red star)but each year i have to replace them after the winter even ones that are 2 and 3 year old won't last

On plant Cordyline australis

Trachecarpus fortuneii is the only truly hardy palm for UK gardeners. Other 'tropical' looking plants that thrive in shade are Fatsia japonica (I have this at the base of large conifers and facing north) or Rheum palmatum, ornamental rhubarb. Take a look at Architectural Plants website under 'illustrated list by category' then go to shade section,(Horsham based nursery) for more ideas.
