Hi. The bottom of my garden is partly shady and has a number of small young trees as well as a couple of larger well established trees. The ground is covered with long grass that i leave to grow. My garden is all on thick clay. I want to add some colour and wondered if someone could suggest what I could plant. I was thinking verbena as it's hardy and self seeds or possibly lupin. Ideas most welcome. Thanks.

Foxgloves should self seed there. If you have a lot of space there's a blue flowered comfrey that the bees love but it does spread quickly. But you can use the leaves for compost or for liquid fertilizer.

ajuga produces a nice blue flower and likes shady conditions. Lamiums will also grow well.

Pulmonaria are pretty, and happy in shade; cowslips look good in grass, or if you want more height Ox-eye daisies and Red campion both seed themselves rapidly.

How do I say thanks?
